Staying at the house

Ronald McDonald House Hobart gives children receiving treatment the best gift of all – their families. Our warm and supportive home-away-from-home provides the whole family with a comfortable place to stay and peace of mind, knowing they can stay together and close to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Our family bedrooms offer much-needed comfort and privacy, while our communal facilities and rooftop garden (featuring some of the best mountain views in Hobart!) are wonderful spaces to relax, socialise, share experiences and create new memories with fellow families.

Our Team

Our dedicated team are ready to reach out with a helping hand whenever things get a little tough. Thanks to our amazing army of over 60 volunteers, we’re able to accommodate families 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Who’s eligible to stay with us?

Keeping the family together can be extremely tough without support, which is why we offer accommodation for parents with seriously ill kids who need to travel to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment. Our House also supports mothers going through high risk pregnancies.

We try to accommodate the needs of families where we can, but this is always subject to availability. Priority is given to families whose children have been recently diagnosed, seriously injured or who require emergency treatment, as well as families of premature babies.

Fees

Ronald McDonald House understands that being away from home for long periods of time can put families under financial pressure. That’s why our accommodation is free for eligible families of seriously ill children.

While our policy is to provide free accommodation, your stay at the House may require you to claim financial support towards accommodation and travel from the relevant government transport assistance scheme in your home state. Our friendly team are happy to work with you to apply for the relevant financial support.

To find out if you’re eligible for government financial assistance, contact your hospital social worker or talk to one of our team.

Want to know more?

We try to make living in our House as much like being at home as possible. We supply basic food items such as bread, milk, cereal, tea and coffee, and even the occasional home-baked goodies brought in by our volunteers. For everything else, there is a Woolworths supermarket just a few doors down.

House Facilities

Our three storey House is designed to be as homely as possible, with private nooks to retreat to after a long day, warm communal spaces and play areas for kids big and small, and of course, our amazing rooftop garden and BBQ rooftop.

Family Bedrooms

Our 11 bedrooms offer a peaceful and private escape with beds for parents and kids, away from the clinical environment of the hospital.

Most of our rooms have private ensuite bathrooms, and there are also convenient communal bathrooms on each of our two accommodation floors. If you need an extra bed or port-a-cot, all you need to do is ask.

Kitchen and Play Space

Our combined kitchen and dining room is the hub of the House. This is where families meet, eat, and share in a journey of togetherness that can truly work wonders in the most trying of times.

The kitchen has a dishwasher and everything you need to cook your favourite meals. We provide each family with allocated space in the fridge, freezer and pantry for their own food, as well as a locked storage cupboard.

Adjoining the dining room is a sitting area and playroom for under 5s, so you can watch the little ones at play from the comfort of our lounge setting.

Lounges and Games Room

Sometimes you need a bit of extra space to enjoy the company of visitors or somewhere to curl up with a good book. Our two accommodation levels each have their own lounge room to allow you to feel right at home.

We have created a comfortable environment for the whole family; even the older kids, with Playstations now available in both lounge rooms.

Laundry

No matter where life takes you, laundry is a chore every parent has to deal with. Our communal laundry is equipped with machines, drying and ironing facilities to help you keep on top of washing duties.

Rooftop Garden

Absolutely our favourite part of the House, the Rooftop Garden is what makes Ronald McDonald House Hobart unique and special.

Just five minutes in the fresh air can lighten the load of a tough day, and the sensational views of the mountains surrounding the outskirts of the city certainly help to soothe the senses! There’s space for kids to ride a bike or play while you rest in a bean bag and watch the clouds float by.  Complete with a barbecue and outdoor tables, the rooftop has a fantastic atmosphere for spending time with visitors or enjoying a meal in the sunshine.

House Programs

Ronald McDonald House Hobart is an independent charity that relies on the work of our volunteers and the financial support of individual and corporate donations.

Without their generous contributions, we would be unable to keep our doors open to families in need 365 days a year. Thanks to the public, we’ve been able to continually expand our operations to help more families and communities in Hobart.

There are many ways you can contribute to our vital programs including our Houses, Family Rooms and Learning Program.

So what’s the first step?

It’s never been easier. Simply start an online RMHC Group Give Fundraiser and let your network know about it!

Volunteer

Our volunteers are an invaluable asset to the House and are actively involved in a number of roles from housekeeping to administration and special events to cooking food for our families. Click here to find out more about volunteering opportunities.

Adopt A Room

Adopting a room is a unique opportunity to assist us in providing the highest level of comfort possible to our families. The proceeds of your adoption allow us to cover the costs associated with that room, including linen, electricity, maintenance, etc.  Your adopted room will bear a plaque with your name on it, and we will keep you up-to-date with news, events and invitations to the exciting things happening at our Houses.  For more information, please contact us at victas@rmhc.org.au

Adopt a Pantry

Each family staying at a Ronald McDonald House is assigned their own pantry in one of our nine kitchens across our four Houses.

We are offering the exclusive opportunity to Adopt a Pantry to help us support families who need to stay at Ronald McDonald House to be close to their child in hospital.

We will create a personalised plaque with your name or logo to be displayed on your adopted pantry in one of bustling kitchens at the House of your choice. For more information on this exclusive offer, contact simone.robbins@rmhc.org.au

Leave a Gift in your Will

Leaving a gift in your will, or a bequest, is a wonderful legacy for future generations.  Anyone can leave a charitable bequest. It is a powerful way to make a positive impact on the future, without affecting your finances in the present.

Whenever the time is right for you, please consider remembering Ronald McDonald House Charities Victoria & Tasmania in your Will.  Your gift will provide love, care and support for seriously ill children and their families whenever they need it.
