Take a break, relax and unwind

"Until you've been there, you can't imagine what it's like, and a room like this, with kitchen, laundry and relaxing facilities - even a bedroom - will be so appreciated."
Wendy, mother of 12-year-old Andrew, who is being treated for cancer at The John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, NSW.

Our Ronald McDonald® Family Room program gives families visiting a sick child a comfortable haven where they can take a break and relax during their visit. Here, we are able to offer a welcoming environment for the family, with the space and facilities to make everyday life caring for a sick child just that little bit easier. We currently have seven Family Rooms in Australia, and we have plans to open more than 14 in the coming years.

There are currently seven family rooms in Australia:

Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, Sydney of NSW

The Ronald McDonald Family Room, Randwick, at the Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) is a sanctuary for parents, who have a child being treated at the hospital. With the convenience and comfort of a home environment within the Hospital, it allows the opportunity for families, no matter where they live, to take a break from the ward, meet and spend time together in a relaxing environment. We provide a communal kitchen, dining area, lounge room with television and children’s movies, computers, laundry, bathroom and two bedrooms. Guests can help themselves to a free cup of coffee or tea as well as make a bite to eat.

We are always recruiting for volunteers that will be the ‘heart of the home’ and help in the day-to-day operations of the Family Room. Similar to running our own homes, there are a range of areas volunteers can contribute, such as greeting guests, housework duties, and fundraising. Volunteers will be provided with training and support.

The Family Room is located on level two of the new Sydney Children’s Hospital wing, just opposite the lifts and is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
