What does a Ronald McDonald House volunteer do?
Support from volunteers in operating the House is vital. At a time when families are under stress coping with a seriously ill child, we aim to make the House a home - somewhere for families to feel safe, supported & cared for. Volunteers play a major role in turning our House into a home by helping to keep the House looking good & functioning well to support families in a time of need.
This may mean cleaning, making beds, stocking the pantry, minor administration tasks, helping families to find their way in a strange city, reading to a child, making a cuppa, cooking a batch of biscuits, lending an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Some volunteers stay overnight as the responsible person to ensure the House runs smoothly when staff are not present.
How can I benefit from being a Volunteer?
At Ronald McDonald House you will find:
“We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill
How do I become a volunteer?
While we welcome new volunteers at any time, as a responsible organisation serving children and families, we must take care to ensure that the goals and values of those seeking to volunteer with us match our own. We believe it is in the best interests of all – you, as a potential volunteer, Ronald McDonald House Charities and the families we serve – to make certain that potential volunteers are truly committed to what is required and that they are suited to the role.
We look for attributes such as patience and tolerance, reliability and trustworthiness, good listening skills, empathy with the needs of others, physical fitness, confidentiality, an ability to engage with adults under stress and an understanding of the needs of children.
If you believe you have a contribution to make to our House, contact us for an application form. Once your application is received, the Volunteer Coordinator will organise an interview and a tour of the House. You will be required to provide a national Police Safety Screening before you commence work with us.
Volunteer recognition is integral to the operation of a Ronald McDonald House and we have many occasions when we get together to have some fun and acknowledge your contribution.
We simply could not do what we do without volunteer input.
