Volunteer
Opportunities

Our volunteer program is very hands-on ensuring the house is maintained to a high standard as well as offering practical and emotional support to children and families during their stay. We are dependent on a dedicated team of volunteers who are at the House 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

It is a team environment and volunteers will undertake a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth running of the House. These may include:

o    Supporting families when needed
o    Lending a listening ear to parents
o    Helping with the general cleaning and maintenance of communal areas
o    Children’s activities
o    Fundraising Activities

Volunteers need to show flexibility and a willingness to help out wherever there is a need. All volunteers are screened, interviewed, orientated and trained before they can join the program. They are also required to complete a police record check.

Ongoing training is provided to cover emergency procedures, palliative and bereavement care, handling of various family issues and concerns. This training helps them understand the most effective ways of supporting the families and children who stay at the House.

Volunteers are also asked to commit themselves to a regular shift (whether weekly, fortnightly) in order to provide continuity for families and staff. After three months, volunteers review their experience and decide, in conjunction with the Manager, Volunteers, if it is appropriate to continue.
