| A life saving alternative |
 |
"Your choice to donate the cord blood at the birth
of your child has resulted in the gift of life to our
child and we sincerely thank you." A family
says thank you to donors for the cord blood their child
received through the RMHC Cord Blood Bank
The RMHC Cord Blood Bank collects umbilical cord blood
which is very high in the stem cells normally only found
in bone marrow. Cord Blood cells are used as an alternative
treatment in childhood leukaemia, aplastic anaemia and
some cancers.
Fifty per cent of children needing bone marrow transplants
do not have a suitable donor. Umbilical cord blood, which
does not have to completely match the recipient, offers
new hope to thousands of Australian children. In around
two years’ time, we should reach our national target
of 22,000 cord blood donations and be able to have a suitable
match for all these children.
Ronald McDonald House Charities made a 5-year, $2.25 million
commitment to the RMHC Cord Blood Banks of Australia.
This funding will help extend the services provided in
Australia by the Cord Blood Banks and relieve the demand
placed on overseas Banks. |
