RMHC Sydney history

Welcome to Ronald McDonald House Charities Sydney.

We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing vital programs for families with seriously ill children.

About Our Chapter

For over 28 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities Sydney has supported thousands of seriously ill children and their parents, carers and guardians. Opened in 1991, our Randwick House provides more than just the basic necessities. We specialise in assisting families who need to travel 100+ km from home to receive specialist medical care for their sick children, offering a warm and welcoming place to stay in a supportive and understanding environment.

Through our accommodation and support services, we strive to build a community that nurtures and empowers seriously ill children and their families.

Our Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are run by a hard working team of staff (including our furry-friend, Wilbur the Therapy Dog!) and dedicated group of volunteers, all aided by the generous support of our donors, sponsors and community and corporate partners.

Our programs

We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing vital programs for families with seriously ill children.

Our chapter run a range of support programs across Sydney including our House, Family Rooms and Learning Program.

House

Our House provides a homely and inviting place to stay for parents, guardians, carers and their siblings while their child is undergoing treatment in Sydney.

Family Rooms

Our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are exclusively for the families of children undergoing treatment in a nearby ward. Run by our friendly volunteers, our Family Rooms are welcoming spaces where you can take time out from the clinical environment of the wards, have a tea or coffee, freshen up with a shower or find a quiet space for a much-needed nap. Our Family Rooms also have dedicated play areas so the siblings of seriously ill children can have a bit of fun.

Learning Program

The Ronald McDonald Learning Program assists school-aged children with serious illnesses and injuries to catch up on missed education following treatment and recovery. Providing a suite of educational support services, including therapy sessions and one-on-one tutorials with experienced teachers, our Ronald McDonald Learning Program is tailored to students’ individual needs. We aim to build each child’s confidence and self-esteem in preparation for their return to the classroom. All services are free to families thanks to funding from our generous RMHC supporters.

Workplace Gift Matching

Many companies match charitable made by their employees, delivering a powerful way to double the impact of your gift.  Matching gifts are a benefit offered by many organisations to encourage philanthropy amongst their employees.  For most companies, it’s as easy as contacting your Human Resources department to begin the process.

Once you have confirmed the gift match, let us know so that once we received the funds, we can provide you with a confirmation notification.  Please contact Rachel McGregor at (02) 9382 4278 | rachel.mcgregor@rmhc.org.au

Team Building

Office culture and staff engagement have quickly become priorities for businesses of all shapes and sizes as proven ways to increase productivity, promote staff retention and improve communication amongst employees.  At RMHC Sydney we want to make it easy for your corporate organisation, community group, university club or collection of friendly neighbours to have a direct impact on the lives of seriously ill children and their families by rolling up your sleeves during one of our group volunteering opportunities:

Home for Dinner:  Parents and carers often return to our Randwick House after long days spent at Hospital bedside, and cooking dinner may be the last thing on their minds.  Our Home for Dinner program provides mid-week relief and support for our families.

Sourcing ingredients and preparing a homemade dinner goes a long way in easing the pressure for our families, giving them a well-deserved ‘night off’, alleviating stress and financial strain felt by our families’.  We have partnered with Sydney’s leading hospitality group, Merivale, to deliver a truly unique Home for Dinner experience for both our volunteer chefs and families.

Working Bees:  RMHC Sydney is committed to ensuring we provide a clean, hygienic and safe space for our families while staying at their ‘home away from home’. Our Working Bees help deliver this vital function by assisting volunteers in basic housekeeping, gardening and simple maintenance duties. As a team building activity, the impact is immediate and tangible.

As a part of this volunteering opportunity, we encourage our Working Bees to support our families during breakfast, by providing a substantial and tasty breakfast option.  This helps reduce the stress felt by our parents and carers while getting everyone ready for the day ahead, encouraging quality time spent together.

Baking a Difference:  As a ‘home away from home’ for our families, we aim to do our very best in delivering a bit of familiarity under extraordinary circumstances.   We believe a small but essential piece in fostering that comfortable, family environment is freshly baked goods.  By sourcing ingredients and preparing a selection of homemade treats, the Baking a Difference program brings joy to everyone involved. Having the simplest of sweet delights goes a long way at our House!

Sponsor A Room

Sponsoring a room or space in our Randwick House of Family Rooms carries a range of meaningful benefits that begin when we attach your plaque to the door and continue throughout the year.  This vital program allows RMHC Sydney to continue supporting seriously ill children and their families for however long they need our help with spaces that deliver warmth, security and sense of community under extraordinary circumstances.  Laundry facilities, family-friendly kitchens, hot showers and comfortable beds are small things that make a huge difference for a family while far from home, friends and extended family.

This support determines how the House operates, directly impacting our ability to provide urgent and ongoing maintenance and upkeep.  Your generous commitment to sponsor a room or space today will ensure RMHC Sydney has the resources necessary to keep 800+ families close year after year.
