When a family is faced with the sudden emergency of a seriously ill child needing specialist medical treatment not available at their regional district hospital they find themselves in an unfamiliar city facing trauma and events that are overwhelming.

Ronald McDonald House Mater provides accommodation for families from regional areas. Length of stay can be anywhere from one night to years months.

The House is situated near the Mater Children's Hospital within the Mater Health Services campus.

The Mater House first opened in July 1990 with eight bedrooms and shared facilities. After refurbishment and an extension in 2006, the Mater House now has 21 rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

In all more than 10,000 families have stayed at the Mater House, many more than once, they have come from as far as Darwin, South Australia and New Zealand. The majority of families who stay at the Mater House are from regional Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Our facilities include 21 rooms (four with wheelchair access), an adult retreat lounge area, games room, outdoor playground and BBQ area, internet kiosk, smokers balcony, laundry facilities, friendly staff and volunteers.
