The Ronald McDonald Family Room in the John Hunter Children's Hospital is a “home within a hospital” and is a place you can go when you can’t go home. This is a place for families and carers with child patients in the hospital to take a break and still be near their children.
Anyone with a child patient in the following wards can use the Family Room facilities:
- J1
- J2
- H1
- NICU
- ICU
- NEXUS
- Paediatric Outpatient Clinics

There is always a volunteer on duty in the Family Room. They are amazing, loving people who will help in any way they can. You will never be alone in the Family Room.
The Family Room’s facilities include:
- a comfortable lounge area
- washer, dryer, iron and ironing board
- kitchen and dining facilities, tea and coffee
- shower and baby change area
- a nap room and fold up cots
- games and toys for children
- a referral service to Ronald McDonald House
The Family Room is located adjacent to ward J1 in the John Hunter Hospital, next to the Fairy Sparkle Garden.
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday: 8am – 9pm
Saturday and Sunday: 9am – 3pm
