Beginnings
The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia,
USA in 1974. It came about from the efforts of Mr &
Mrs Fred Hill (a player for the Philadelphia Eagles, whose
3 year old daughter had been diagnosed with leukaemia),
Jim Murray, the Eagles' manager and Dr. Audrey Evans,
head of the paediatric oncology unit at the Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia. They contacted McDonald's in
Philadelphia to see if they would be interested in supporting
the creation of a house - a place where families could
stay together and share with other families facing a common
crisis. McDonald's responded by donating the entire proceeds
- $35,000 from a shake promotion.
A local contractor, whose own daughter had been diagnosed
with leukaemia, donated his services and, together with
help from parents, volunteers, McDonald's franchisees,
doctors and donors constructed the first house. They all
decided to name it Ronald McDonald House because Ronald
represented fun, happiness and trust for children.
